Salvation, The First Resurrection For Believers

User Rating:  / 1

The most famous resurrection, of course, is the one that happened that eventful day in Jerusalem.

It is important that we receive it as fact and confess it. The believing of it and the confession of it is the only way to be saved (Romans 10:9-10). There are many other resurrections, however, that occur in the life of every believer and they too are reason to celebrate. Look at the first one. You see, as sinners, before the new birth, we were dead.

Ephesians 2:1-4, Paul reveals that we were controlled by Satan and that our minds were blinded by him. We were dead, spiritually dead, in trespasses and sin. True, we were alienated from the life of God by our wicked works (Colossians 1:21 and Ephesians 4:18). We did not understand that we were dead because of the ignorance that was in us. Our hearts were blinded because of the ignorance that was in us. Our hearts were blinded (hardened) by sin. We were insensitive to our condition or past feeling (Ephesians 4:19).

In short, we were helpless to bring ourselves out of this dead state and our destiny was eternal death and damnation. We had a few pleasures, but I Timothy 5:6 states that if that is all we live for, we are really dead while we live. Clearly, we needed to experience a resurrection. Jesus came for that purpose (St John 10:10). He came to raise dead men from the graves of sin; to quicken our mortal bodies and to cause us to walk in newness of life, just as He did after he was raised up by the glory of the Father (Romans 6:4).

Salvation is a resurrection experience, but it is only the beginning. I have found that, as a Christian, I experience many “quickening” by the Spirit that Jesus from the dead. I recently had my 40th spiritual birthday and as I reflected upon the events of the day I was born again, I was reminded of the many times I had experienced new life in Christ. I have had many funerals, burying old grudges. Each one changed my life and gave me a closer walk with my living Savior! These deaths will continue to occur until I am eternally quickened and resurrected for the last time as stated in I Corinthians 15:51-55. Until that ultimate resurrection, I must wait here, held in by bars of flesh; fighting daily to conquer my old nature which decides from time to time to come out of the tomb.

People, circumstances, the devil and my own weaknesses, keep rolling the stone away and I have to keep crucifying my old man over and over. I have to admit that this has gotten easier as I have made a strong stand against him, but he still lies there waiting for an opportunity to present himself as alive. This mortal has not yet put on immortality and this corruption is still just that.

So, I am waiting for my change to come. Every now and then, I experience a quickening by the same Spirit that raised Jesus from the dead and that gives me strength to conquer him again. I can make it because Christ, my risen Lord, is even at the right hand of God making intercession for me (Romans 8:34). This would not be possible if He had stayed in the grave. But He didn’t stay there. He arose to give me power over my old man and He ever lives to give me grace to stand (Hebrews 9:24). From time to time, my dreams die, my vision fades and it seems that death will surely conquer everything that I have worked for all these forty plus years of preaching, teaching , and singing the gospel. Again, I need that quickening experience and true to His promise, the resurrected Lord shows up and touches my inner man, anointing me with fresh oil, leading me to a higher place in Him.
